Is Mobile Dry Cleaning The Right Business For You?

The dry cleaning pick-up and delivery business has shaped my life in so many ways: college educations for my two children, community and charitable organizations, trips and vacations every year some years twice, new cars for my wife and children every two years, a beautiful home with a swimming pool, and a second home at a Pennsylvania ski resort. Money was never a problem and still isn't. My wife and I retired at age 55 and moved to Southern Florida. To be honest, my health forced me into early retirement and after a prolonged recovery experience I decided not to return to an active working life style. Enough money had been accumulated over the years to allow me to retire comfortably so I decided it was time to "enjoy" life and spend more time with my wife and grandchildren. Now, let's talk about what qualities you need to be a successful business person.

First, you need to think like a Business Person.  What does it take to be a success and are you willing to give your business what it takes?

Businesses need customers and sales to survive. Customers are found through advertising, word of mouth, salesmanship, management skills, and patience and perseverance:

• Advertising requires you to spend money and therefore it requires a budget. It also requires knowledge of  your potential market and the ability to research your advertising results.
   
• Word of mouth brings you solid customers and is earned through excellent service and customer relations.  Costs are very low but your customers have to be made aware of your desire to have them promote you to their friends and in return must be rewarded for their efforts.
   
• Salesmanship requires some effort on the part of the business person, but is easily learned and not as difficult a chore as you may think. You sell something everyday to someone without even realizing it.  How many times have you had to convince someone to do something that you are particularly interested in doing. e.g. going to a certain restaurant, watching a TV show you want rather than what someone else wants, convincing another to do something that interests you?  This is all a form of salesmanship.
   
• Management skills also are activities that you perform every day.  Do you pay your bills on time? Are you responsible when it comes to budgeting  your living expenses?  Do you maintain your living quarters? How about food and living essentials, do you purchase these items regularly and maintain inventories to keep your requirements well stocked? If you do these things, you are displaying management skills.
   
• Patience and perseverance are desired characteristics of the business person.  It takes time to develop a business and patience and perseverance is required to evaluate and see the results of your efforts.

Ask yourself if you have what it takes to start and operate a business.  If you feel the rewards far outweigh the risk and that you are willing to work for your own success, then all the necessary characteristics and techniques can be learned. 

Some of you already possess these attributes and your journey to success will be easier and faster than others, but success is not reserved only for you.  I think we all know the fairy tale about "The tortoise and The Hare." both animals have different skills, but both completed the race.  The winner was a surprise and the lesson learned is that anyone can succeed even with seemingly inferior skills.

Make a conscious effort to look at the world through a business person's eyes. When you look at the world this way, you will start seeing million dollar opportunities all around you.
